3-D X-rays / Imaging

Unlike 2D X-rays, three-dimensional X-ray imaging has been developed to help build an understanding of the whole mouth by designing a 3D rendering of the oral cavity. 3D imaging captures a true 3D image of the mouth and allows the dentist to study the mouth in slices, similar to a CT scan. These X-rays, sometimes referred to as cone beams, capture images of the teeth and mouth.

3D X-rays are helpful for the following:

  • Orthodontic procedures
  • Surgical planning and treatment of potential teeth
  • Diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ or jawbone) disorders Exact placement of dental implants
  • Finding the Origin of Pain or Illness
  • Detecting, measuring and treating jaw tumors.
  • Computing data for bone structure and health
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Planning for root canal therapy or bone graft
  • Evaluation of sinus, jaw, or nasal cavity concerns

Which is better 2D Xray or 3D Xray?

3D X-ray is much better than traditional 2D X-ray. Their technological marvel has created a new and advanced way to carefully diagnose and treat diseases, while ensuring that patients feel properly treated and diagnosed.

Here are some more benefits:
  • Advanced Treatment:
  • Your dentist will be able to plan a treatment protocol that is specific and unique to your dental problems.
  • Speed
  • A 3D X-ray takes only 14 to 20 seconds to complete and the computer completes its reconstruction in about 7 minutes, while a 2D X-ray can take a while to collect the data.
  • Convenience
  • With 2D X-rays required for the development of films, patients are often uncomfortable. A 3D X-ray takes away that hassle.
  • Improved diagnostic capability
  • A picture of the entire mouth is shown along with 3D AX-rays, which helps in enhancing the diagnostic process.
  • Reduced exposure
  • 3D X-ray scanners emit lower X-ray doses than those emitted by conventional 2D X-ray products. It reduces the risk of cancer from the radiation produced by 2D X-ray equipment.
  • The Complete Picture
  • A 3D X-ray shows areas that can easily be hidden with a 2D X-ray.
  • Better patient education
  • With 3D X-rays patients are able to see and understand their dental X-rays more easily, as they show things in great detail.
